Workshop Details
What: A reading and lecture by the acclaimed Irish author Sebastian Barry from his 2008 Man Booker Prize runner-up novel, The Secret Scripture. The lecture will be followed by a question-and-answer session during which students may ask Sebastian Barry about his novel or related topics. Students will also participate in small-group discussion with other first-year students led by one of Georgetown's Faculty members, Deans, or Alumni. Attendance is mandatory for all first-year students.

Time: 2:00-5:00 pm
Location: On the afternoon of Saturday, September 12, a total of three hours of your time is required.
Location: Students whose last names begin with letters A (Abdukadir) through K (Kirton) will first participate in a group discussion at 2:15 pm. - 3:15 p.m., then attend a lecture in Gaston Hall from 3:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.
Students whose last names begin with letters K (Kjeldgaard) through Z (Zrike) will first attend a lecture in Gaston Hall from 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., then participate in a group discussion from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Preparation: Read Sebastian Barry's The Secret Scripture and write a one page paper analyzing a stylistic or thematic issue that you find particularly significant in the novel. Email your paper to your discussion leader by August 23. The contact information for your discussion leader will be available shortly.
Sebastian Barry's The Secret Scripture is available in hardcover and in paperback. We ask all members of the Georgetown Class of 2013 to acquire a copy of the novel.
