Guidelines for Collaborative Research
The Faculty Committee for International Initiatives has made available funding to support the following:
A. International Collaborative Research
International Collaborative Research Grants, designated for Georgetown University employed tenure and tenure track faculty, are awarded for scholarly collaborative research. The collaborative nature of the research is a key component requiring the principal collaborator (or collaborators) to be from foreign institutions such as:
- Universities
- Institutes
- Research labs
- Government agencies
- Organizations where scholarly research is conducted.
The grant will include travel and living expenses of the Georgetown applicant or applicants and up to a maximum of 30% of the total grant amount for essential research support (e.g., expendable research supplies, data acquisition costs). The total amount of the grant is not to exceed $6,000. Priority will be given to Main Campus faculty. The grant cannot be used to support the following:
- Travel and funds to organize or attend conferences or workshops
- Purchase of equipment
- Funds to be used solely for seminar/conference speakers
- Page charges for publication
- Projects that have already received funding from either the Graduate School or the FLL
- Travel expenses for a collaborating foreign colleague, except under extraordinary conditions in which the proposed project cannot otherwise go forward. The reasons for such a request must be fully explained in the application.
B. Other International Research Projects
Limited funds are available for international collaborative research projects that do not include travel or for participation in international collaborative networks.
The Faculty Committee for International Initiatives realizes that not all international collaborative research involves travel; therefore, the Committee will entertain proposals for projects of defined and limited scope within an international context. Such proposals should address the defined and limited scope which makes the project inapplicable for external research funding. Only a limited proportion of available funds will be targeted toward this support.
Research Project Grant Application procedures: (these procedures should be followed for both International Collaborative Research Grants (A) and Other International Research Projects (B)):

Research Project Financial and Reporting procedures:
If your proposal is approved for funding, you will be required to submit a (brief) final report indicating how the funding was used and what you accomplished. If reimbursement is sought before completion of the project, progress reports should be submitted with expenses, although a final report is still needed for the files.
C. Florence Exchange Program
A faculty exchange program has been established between Georgetown and the following partner university:
- The University of Florence, Italy
The short term (2-3 weeks) faculty exchange focuses on teaching. Georgetown faculty members' expenses will be covered by a special grant. Faculty exchanges are approved within the context of the curricular interests and needs of the host institution. Please download the application form and send it, along with your CV, to Philip Thomas in the Office of International Initiatives.
