Professor Rothman Earns Distinguished Achievement in Research Award

Professor Adam Rothman, a professor of History in Georgetown College, has received this year’s Distinguished Achievement in Research Award for his book, Beyond Freedom’s Reach: A Kidnapping in the Twilight of Slavery. Based on archival research in the United States and Cuba, Rothman’s book explores the true story of three enslaved children taken to Havana from New Orleans during the U.S. Civil War, and their mother’s efforts to rescue them. Beyond Freedom’s Reach has won prizes from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, the American Civil War Museum, and American Library Association.

Professor Rothman specializes in American history from the Revolution to the Civil War and the history of slavery and abolition in the Atlantic World. He is also the curator of the Georgetown Slavery Archive. He wishes to express his sincere gratitude to his colleagues in the History Department at Georgetown for their support and advice as he wrote Beyond Freedom’s Reach.
