Rank and Tenure
The promotion and tenure process relies on presenting the work and trajectory of candidates in a clear, consistent, objective and fair way. Dossiers should present a neutral account of the merits of each case. Understanding the standards for a good dossier is vital to ensuring that we adhere to our mission and the ambitions of our faculty.
Procedures change over time, therefore we arrange meetings each year to provide opportunities for group discussion on issues that arise when preparing dossiers. Information for administrators and candidates assisting with the Interfolio dossier preparation can be found here as well.
Extension of Tenure Probationary Period
In an effort to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on progress towards tenure, tenure track faculty members employed in 2019-2020 in their sixth year or earlier have received have two additional probationary years. The first one-year extension was announced in Spring 2020 and a second one-year extension was announced in Fall 2020. These extensions also apply to new hires starting on the tenure track in the 2020-2021 academic year. These extensions are automatic and no application is needed. Further, these extensions do not affect the option to apply for tenure at any time, prior to the end of the probationary period. For illustrative examples, click here.
In Spring 2022, an automatic one-year extension of the probationary period was granted to faculty who started between July 1 and December 31, 2021. This extension acknowledges that the pandemic-related disruptions that justified the extensions for prior cohorts continued in Academic Year 2021-22.
None of these extensions removes the option of applying early during any year of the tenure probationary period up to and including the sixth year.
