Notification of the President’s decision
The final decisions on promotion, appointment to rank, and grant of tenure rest with the President. The decisions will be communicated by letter to the candidate by July 31, with copies to the deans and chairs.
In the case of an adverse decision, the faculty member may file a petition for reconsideration. This should be a letter from the applicant to the President that lists the reasons for the request for reconsideration and that addresses, as applicable, any updates, clarifications, or other comments she or he wishes to share with regard to her or his own scholarly and professional accomplishments — research, teaching, and service. The letter will serve to supplement the application materials that were available to the UCRT, Provost, and President. The letter should be submitted through the Office of the Provost for recordkeeping purposes.
Terminal-year, non-tenure-eligible appointment eligibility and process

A faculty member who is denied tenure in the sixth year of the tenure probationary period and who does not reapply in the seventh year of the tenure probationary period will be terminated at the end of the seventh year. A faculty member who applies for tenure in the seventh year of the tenure probationary period may request a terminal appointment for the subsequent year, in case the application is denied. If tenure is denied, the tenured faculty of the relevant unit may, at their discretion, approve a terminal year appointment with a normal teaching assignment but without tenure-eligibility, provided that the request for the appointment is received prior to course planning for the year of the appointment and that such appointment is consistent with the needs of the department. No application for tenure may be made during a terminal year following expiration of the tenure probationary period.
The following clarifies eligibility and the process for requesting a terminal-year, non-tenure-eligible appointment in the event that tenure is not granted by the end of the seventh year of the probationary period:
- Only faculty who have not received a research or teaching leave that interrupted their tenure-probationary period may request a so-called terminal eighth-year appointment.
- The request for a terminal-year appointment must be submitted to the Provost “prior to course planning for the year of the appointment,” which is understood to be the Registrar’s first deadline for the submission of the Fall schedule of classes (in mid February).

- The candidate must initiate the request by informing the department chair or school dean that he or she wishes to be provided the opportunity for such appointment in the event that tenure is denied. The tenured faculty in the department or school must agree to recommend such appointment and their recommendation must be secured before the request is submitted by the department chair or school dean to the Provost.
- The request should not be included among the dossier materials.
Requests for creation of ad hominem AAP, staff, or instructional positions
Proposals that members of the Ordinary faculty leave that status and take up full-time non-Ordinary teaching appointments will not normally be approved. Such arrangements proposed at the time of a negative tenure decision or in proximate anticipation of a negative decision will not normally be considered. Members of the Ordinary faculty are, of course, eligible to compete on normal terms for positions in the University either during their probationary periods or later.
