Nathan Schneider, Kevin Tobia, and Brandon Waldon Submit Amicus Brief to U.S. Supreme Court

As part of an interdisciplinary collaboration on linguistic approaches to legal interpretation, Prof. Nathan Schneider (Departments of Computer Science and Linguistics), Prof. Kevin Tobia (Georgetown Law), and Dr. Brandon Waldon (Tech & Society Fritz Fellow) submitted an amicus brief in a high-profile U.S. Supreme Court case on the meaning of the word ‘firearm’ in federal law, using the broader semantic category of artifact nouns to guide the analysis. The amicus brief was cited at the center of the majority opinion, which concluded that a gun parts kit was functionally a firearm per the federal definition.
