SEIU Local 500
Georgetown University recognizes SEIU Local 500 as the sole and exclusive collective bargaining representative of all part-time faculty employed to teach in the programs and academic units of the Employer’s Main Campus in Washington D.C., as defined within the scope of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement provides that any adjunct faculty member covered by the Agreement must either voluntarily become a member in good standing of the Union or shall be required as a condition of continued employment to pay the Union an agency fee, unless an exemption set forth in the Agreement applies. SEIU provides an application form which is available online:
- Go to the SEIU home page at www.seiu500.org and select “My Workplace” in the menu across the top.
- Scroll down to Georgetown University.
- Scroll down to “Become a Member” and select “Click Here…”
- Complete an online application
*Note that you select the applicable exemption status from the drop-down menu.
In this form you may indicate whether you want to join the union or pay agency fees, or request an exemption based on one of the categories listed in Article 3.B of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. If approved for an exemption, a donation to one of the Jesuit charities listed below will be required.
Donations in Lieu of SEIU Agency Fee
A part-time faculty member who believes that s/he is exempt from paying the Union agency fee under Article 3.B.8 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement must provide evidence to the SEIU Local 500 to support this claim. The union will review the evidence provided to verify the claimed status and will notify the faculty member of the acceptance or denial of the claim.
Guidelines for Donations in Lieu of Paying an Agency Fee to SEIU Local 500
Part-time faculty who have been notified by email by the Union that they are exempt from paying the Union agency fee under Article 3.B.8 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement are required to make contributions in an amount equal to the agency fee to a charitable organization(s) agreed to by the University and the Union in lieu of paying this fee.
The University and the Union have agreed to the Jesuit Refugee Service and the Jesuit Volunteer Corps for this purpose.
If and only if you have received written notification from the Union that you have been approved to make a contribution in lieu of the agency fee, you may either:
- Sign up for an automatic payroll deduction to authorize the University to deduct your contribution directly from your paycheck and submit it to the Jesuit Refugee Service or the Jesuit Volunteer Corps; or
- Make a payment directly to the Jesuit Refugee Service or the Jesuit Volunteer Corps by check or through their websites. If you opt to pay directly, you must provide the Office of Faculty Records with a copy of your payment receipt that documents a payment equal to the amount of the agency fee. A copy of your receipt may be submitted by email to facultyrecords@georgetown.edu or mailed to:
